My approach is to understand your presenting issues/concerns in a bigger sociocultural and historical context while also respecting you as a unique individual.

What is Social Justice Counseling?

As a social justice counselor, I pay attention to a wide range of your sociocultural identities, including race, ethnicity, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, class, physical/intellectual/emotional ability, immigration status, education level, and age.  Together, we will work with your individual empowerment, in addition to actively confronting injustice and inequity in your community and the broader society.  Sometimes this means my role as a counselor can shift more towards that of an advocate or case manager, for example, connecting you with resources to further support your daily living situation.

According to the American Counseling Association, "Social Justice Counseling acknowledges that human development issues need to be understood within the context of living in an oppressive environment. Counseling is not office bound. The debilitating impact of oppression warrants the need for advocacy and activism in communities. Social justice counselors understand that counseling involves both individual and systems work." (www.counseling.org
